At the base of Mt Cooroora in the Noosa hinterland, Pomona was built on the timber industry and dairy farms. The town grew up as the region’s raiilhead soon after the main northern railway line opened in 1891 and it has remained a quiet country town with a main shopping street, a pub and a primary school. It also has a high school for Years 8 and 9 as a campus of Noosa District High in Cooroy. Its most significant building though is the Majestic Theatre which opened in 1921 and, as the world’s only continuously operating silent movie theatre, continues to attract audiences from far and wide. Noosa Shire Council was based in Pomona from its formation in 1909 until 1980, when it moved to Tewantin on the coast. The council building now houses an historical museum. The township was first bypassed by the Bruce Highway and then its bypass bypassed by the Cooroy bypass, so that it is now quietly tucked away in the Noosa hinterland. The 6897ha Pomona statistical district had a population density of 0.38 per hectare at the 2006 census.
Summing up:Pomona is a pleasant rural town with the infrastructure that comes with age, including a showground, hall and bowls club. Most of the original town blocks are a generous 1000 sq metres and there are still original Queenslanders among the newer homes. In the surrounding district, acreages range from five acres to 120 acres upwards. It is affordable for young families to enjoy country life not too far from the coast.
