TWIN WATERS
Twin-Waters

When it was first proposed, around 1989, that a five-star resort built would be built on the north shore of the Maroochy River, the idea seemed highly ambitious. When the proponents then went on to say it would ultimately include a big canalfront housing estate nearby, it was met with utter disbelief. This, after all, was an area notorious for mangrove swamp and home only to swarms of sandflies. The only human visitors brave enough to take the sand track from Mudjimba down to the Black Bank were keen fishermen.

Nevertheless, after some wheeling and dealing, particularly with the Green lobby that could put up plenty of valid reasons why it shouldn’t go ahead, Twin Waters Resort opened “where the river meets the sea” with great fanfare in 1990.

With the Twin Waters Golf Club that followed, the extent and quality of the development surprised even the hardened cynics who thought no good could ever come out of this low-lying area.

It has turned out to be a first class estate full of quality homes with both dry and canal blocks.

The 1989 opening of the Maroochy River Bridge at the Cod Hole, the one that has now been duplicated, guaranteed that this new township would be in a prime position.

Twin Waters, which can now be seen emerging from the bush on the opposite side of the river from Maroochydore, is part of the 2575 hectare statistical district that includes Marcoola in the north and the older adjoining suburbs of Pacific Paradise and Mudjimba that had a population density of 3.81 per hectare at the 2006 census.

It is close to the airport but is largely spared aircraft noise from the runway. The airport opened in 1961 and that was factored in when Twin Waters was planned almost a half century later.

Summing up: Twin Waters is a sophisticated canal suburb bordered by ocean, river and the Sunshine Motorway. It is in the centre of the action and has its own local shopping as well as the big Bi-Lo supermarket and shopping centre and the North Shore Multi Sports Complex and schools nearby.
